Week 14: Vietnam War

Combat footage from the Vietnam War
It somewhat surprises me how some things in history go unnoticed, I don't recall learning much about this war in previous history class, so it was interesting to learn some different facts about history.

The Vietnam war was one of the longest wars in American history. For the Vietnam war to be the most unpopular war there were a lot of deaths, this war resulted in 60,000 American deaths and an estimate of 2 million Vietnamese deaths, I honestly don't see how it's the most unpopular, we have to stop pushing things under the rugs this event was major if you ask me.

I think the United Stated sucks at minding it's own business, then we soon realized they get involved in things for their own benefits. During this time communism was the main goal. Communism is state control over everything. I feel that the world has too many jobs and functions to leave control to just one person or state. We need the diversity in thinking and in decision making. No one can make all the right choices for billions of different people.

Land of the free was a term used SO lightly during this period because the boys definitely had no choice when it came down to war, they were drafted into war once they turned 18. I don't believe you should be forced to do anything especially not to fight in war! Some of those young boys lost their life and I bet some came back with very bad conditions or even PTSD. It's really not a game and I feel the government does not take those type of things seriously, no amount of money or benefits they try to offer will mean anything if they don't live to see another day. On top of that soldiers that did survive were not respected when they came back to America, that's the most unappreciative thing ever!!

From 1968 to 1973 they attempted to end the conflict through diplomacy. In January 1973, an agreement was finally made, U.S. forces were withdrawn from Vietnam, and U.S. prisoners of war were released.

In April 1975, South Vietnam surrendered to the North, and Vietnam was reunited.
