Week 11: The US & World War ll

World War 2  Sep 1, 1939 – Sep 2, 1945

Seems like during this time period countries were driven off of power! Each of the countries were wanting to expand their powers by taking over lands and territories. During this time Hitler was the leader of Germany wanted the Nazi's to take over as much land as they could. Japan wanted to be the leader of east Asia. Eventually with all of the countries trying to invade each other and conquer more land a war would start. The US was not involved in the war at first and was going to stay neutral, but Japan bombed the US at the Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
With each war there comes culture shifts. After the attack on Pearl Harbor the US moved anyone of Japanese descent to concentration camps, over half were children. After things got settled they were allowed to return home sadly to find their homes had been robbed or vandalized. In 1990 they were each given $20,000 in reparations. Too me that was kind of sad but the ignorance of the US must of somehow lead them to feel betrayed by the Americans of Japanese decent. The US didn't take into consideration that some of those people could have been innocent.
Another culture shift was more African Americans actually wanted to join the military during war. Returning veterans were promised a lot of great benefits. This time around they were given good positions like pilots.
This serves as evidence of there being somewhat of a racial attitude because during this time women were able to do work to help out with the war, African American joining the military, and the Japan concentration camps. Mexican Americans and Japanese Americans were also allowed to fight in war. Manipulation was used to recruit some Japanese Americans, thinking it would proved their loyalty to the US. I definitely feel race perceptions were changed a lot after this war.

Comments

  1. Issues that caused WWI some of them leaked over causing WWII. The First World War was caused by the thirst for power and territory among European countries with Germany and Britain going head to head in the arms race. The Second War was a little different I guess in terms of the nature of the governments in control in Germany. The Kaiser was a hot headed dude who sought glory for Germany like Hitler but Hitler was just a different type of evil. Not only was he keen on restoring German glory he was also pushed by super racist ideas

  2. America has always lived in fear of anything different from them. People come to America for a second chance in life only to have that blow up in their face because their skin looks different. America forced people, law abiding citizens, into hiding and suffrage with concentration camps all because people they probably didn't even know bombed Pearl Harbor. The assumption that the Japanese were spies is what really confuses me. They came to America, way before any of the plans were formed for there to be a World War. Most of them were born in America!
