Week 3 Reflection: Industrial Capitalism
STRAIGHT OUT
OF
THE GILDED AGE
"Glittering on the surface, but corrupt underneath"
The Gilded Age was definitely a period of greed!Shady business practices were at an all time high, or should I say CAPITALISM at it's best! The 19th century was the rise of a modern industrial economy. The discovery of gold, silver, and other precious minerals in the West made a lot of American move west. The expansion of railroads and the creation of barbed wire and better windmills and pumps caused ranchers and farmers to move to the Great Plain. (*inside thought: they were just trying to make a better life for themselves and families*)American's moved in hopes of having a better life, but sadly they had consequences to face. The issue is the whites in that era wanted you to do their work, and give workers very little pay or none!

The Free Market was definitely a MYTH in the U.S. because the government has ALWAYS been an influence!
The workers became very unhappy with the injustices, and tried to do something about it! The whites workers defined their jobs as "wage slavery" meaning a person that is dependent on income from employment. (*inside thought: Did they think these people were going to be rich... they just overcame slavery*). White workers came up with the term "living wage" which allows a comfortable life and ability to support a family. In the 19th century they felt ONLY woman and children were supposed to be dependents. Living wages allowed employers to pay less because of race, gender, or ethnicity. To make matters even better.. they then said the household labor woman were doing was not real labor and did not deserve pay so they paid them less. Employers justification for that, "Woman are paid less because they do not have to provide for a family. The workers eventually got fed up and decided to go on strike. (*inside thought: do you ever get happy to see someone stand up to their bully? Lol, that's how I feel about the strikes*)The Pullman strike was declared illegal by President Cleveland and federal troops were sent out to suppress the strike. The Homestead strike cause the state militia to come out to end the strike. In 1895 the government passed a law that their actions to crush strikes were legal. That proves that the government has always been involved and the Free Market is a myth.
