Week 2 Reflection: History of Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow

Honestly, this is the most I've really been into history! I made myself read all the assignments aloud with nothing else on. I really started getting into it. I find history so shocking when I starting thinking about how old I would have been during these times, and how hard and scary some months were while living during such eras vs. how life really was for me and the economy during particular ages. (If that makes any sense).  It honestly just makes me more grateful and humble towards how I was raised compared to how it was during certain eras where people have lost their life for being a certain color. It's ridiculous. When I think of how school was for me in elementary; I had friends of all colors, shapes or whatever, but I always liked to be around nice funny people, I’ve never been judgmental. (Basically, if you're cool, you're cool😄☺️) It's so hard to imagine hating a person so much because of them being colored. Starting with black code. First of all, you can not renege on a bet. To make this make sense to ME: The civil war was a fight to be free of slavery.  Slave states and free states didn't want to put there differences aside about the power of the national government prohibiting slavery in territories that have not become states yet. So we go to war about it! Free states win the war and say NO MORE SLAVERY ! So the freed black people finally get the 14th amendment which guarantees the citizenship. And of course those who hate black people create Black Codes... (WE JUST WENT THROUGH A WHOLE WAR, you were supposed to let the whole black vs white, white supremacy thing go, WE WON THE WAR!🙄)
Me as i'm reading black code articles

Black codes were created to limit the rights of blacks by restricting their freedom, and making them work for low wages or debt. Southern whites wanted to suppress their new freedom. (We just can’t win). Then, the president that tried to help the world, gets assassinated. (This sounds like a movie, lol) Lincoln's assassination, left Andrew Johnson to be president. (Great👎) Andrew Johnson gave former Confederates power, opposed rights for freed people, and supported state’s rights.
When I think about the 15th amendment, this blog post made me realize how much we take those people who fought for us and died for granted! There are people who DO NOT vote despite years ago we didn't have a say so in what goes on in the government, thousands really died for this right.
After 1877, this "reconstruction" period ended, then the rise of Jim Crow rises (I just can't believe that after the war they still didn't think maybe these people have had enough). Jim Crow was a system enforced by terror for segregation.

Like honestly our world is not perfect right now... but we've came along way. If I was born back then with the attitudes I have now, they would have definitely tried to get rid of me because I talk too much!
This is why they would want to get rid of me lol!

“wealth is mainly the result of its owner’s efforts and that an average worker can…become” successful.
My interpretation of that is, You get what you PUT IN! We are in charge of our success. Whatever you want to be, you work hard to be it.

  1. Hi Johnese,
I am Jessica Stills, I find your blog to be intensively creative. I like how you used memes to described yourself, being its your first time learning about the reconstruction era. I found it to be humorous but you still stuck to the task which is excellent.

  2. Hi Johnese, my name is Jazmin Kelley. I really like your reflection on the reconstruction era. I also like the edits and pictures you used for this blog, it makes it very entertaining to read. I absolutely agree on the fact the all these changes had happened simply because of hatred on a skin color. Blacks were promised so much but was given so little of those promises, we are still fighting but we did make some big changes on the way.

  3. Hi Johnese, I am CIana. You are so funny and spot on. I love how you incorporated the gifs and memes in your blog because I'm sure that is how we all felt. You made a lot of valid points within your blog. People should not base their hate towards a person solely on the color of their skin. African Americans fought in a war, to be freed of slavery. However, although they were freed of slavery they were not freed of the hatred others felt towards them. They were not freed of the discrimination, abuse, or dehumanization that they endured. It is truly sad because someone will always have something to offer that goes well beyond skin deep, and others would never know because they choose to discriminate.

  4. Hello,

I am Shameal Emory. I love the picture! The fact that you were able to relate our history to a board game that still is being played today. Your blog was very detailed and explained how monopoly is related to capitalism. The money hungry era is correct, but as you stated, unfortunately America still operates and functions this way.Great job.

  5. Hey Johnese, I am Miranda. First I love your meme. As I began to read your post I was the same way. I am so into history and I begin to picture how my life would've or could've been back during this time. I felt that it's crazy how we are able to see the differences and the improvement of the quality of life. I think that it is just weird that people hate others because of something so small as skin color as if we aren't all the same.
